The man behind the scholarship

Meet Swede.

Wayne Raymond “Swede” Lien was LiveWell founder Ragnar's great-grandpa, or oldefar in Norwegian. His family came from Norway. The values they passed down are the same ones a good fraternity should teach: hard work, loyalty, and showing up for the people who count on you.

This scholarship carries his name to help more guys find that kind of brotherhood. The cost of joining shouldn't be what keeps you out.

His family's roots were in Ringebu, Norway. Born March 11, 1917, Swede joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and moved to Oregon in 1939. During World War II, he built Liberty ships at the Portland shipyards.

He married Arminta Johnson Overgard in 1949. Swede worked as an Oregon logger for more than 20 years before starting his own farm and orchard, growing mostly blueberries and peaches.

He lived in Dayton, Oregon, where he passed away on June 16, 2012, at 95.

Swede didn't go to college, but he celebrated fraternity in his own way through his active involvement in the Sons of Norway.

“He was one of the best men I’ve ever known. He showed me what love, family, integrity, hard work, and responsibility look like. I try to live up to his example every single day.”

Who should apply

Men who belong to a social or philanthropic fraternity, or are interested in joining one, may apply, regardless of their school or fraternity affiliation. If dues are keeping you from joining or staying involved, this scholarship is meant to help. Preference is given to Stetson University students and Phi Sigma Kappa members. You must be a full-time college student with a 3.0 GPA or better. First-semester guys use their high school GPA.

You don't need to have rushed, joined a chapter, or held a leadership role to apply. We want to hear why you're interested in fraternity life and how you'd like to get involved. We also give preference to psychology, pre-healthcare, and business or marketing majors.

To keep it for the year, you keep a 3.0, stay active in the chapter, log at least 10 service hours a semester, and check in with someone from LiveWell once a semester. That's it.

The heritage video

There's no essay. Record a short video on your phone about your family's heritage. Aim for about 2 minutes. There's no minimum length. If you're not sure where to start, use these prompts:

  • Where's your family from?
  • Tell us about one person or tradition that matters to you.
  • What's something they taught you that you want to carry forward?

You don't have to cover everything. One family story is plenty.

This scholarship honors a guy from Norway. Your family doesn't have to be Norwegian or Scandinavian. Wherever your people came from, tell us about them. What did they teach you? What are you proud of? What are you passing on?

You don't need a script, editing, or fancy equipment. Just tell us about your family, in your own words.

I'm damn proud of my Norwegian heritage. Be damn proud of yours, too, and the forebears who got you here. You wouldn't be where you are today if it weren't for them.

FAQ

I haven't rushed yet. Can I still apply?

Yes. If you're interested in going Greek this recruitment period, apply. If you get the award as a potential new member, you need to be initiated by the end of the fall semester to get spring funding.

I already paid my dues this semester.

Send us the chapter's receipt and we reimburse you.

Is this only for guys with Norwegian heritage?

No. Every heritage is welcome, and the video is about yours, whatever it is. The name honors one Norwegian family. Men from any social or philanthropic fraternity are welcome to apply.

Do I have to do the internship?

No. It's a perk, not a requirement. Taking it or skipping it has no effect on your scholarship.

What happens if my GPA drops?

One semester below a 3.0 gets you a warning. Two in a row ends your scholarship, but you can appeal if a death in the family, illness, or another serious situation affected your grades. You won't have to pay back scholarship money we've already paid.

Can I get it again next year?

Yes, but you apply again with everyone else. Nobody is grandfathered in.

Who decides?

A three-person selection committee at LiveWell. Nobody from the chapter is involved in picking.
