Bipolar
What It Is:
Bipolar disorder involves significant mood swings, with episodes ranging from manic highs to depressive lows. These shifts can feel overwhelming, but they’re manageable with the right support.
What This Might Look Like:
In manic phases, you may feel euphoric, have bursts of energy, or act impulsively. During depressive phases, you may experience low energy, sadness, and a lack of interest in activities.
How This Could Impact Your Life:
Mood swings can affect relationships, job performance, and financial stability. Manic episodes can lead to risky behaviors, while depressive episodes can cause isolation and difficulty functioning.
Statistics:
Around 2.6% of U.S. adults are diagnosed with bipolar disorder each year. It usually appears in the late teens or early 20s, and early treatment can significantly improve long-term outcomes.
Gold Standard for Treatment:
Mood stabilizers, such as lithium, combined with therapy (often CBT or family-focused therapy), are commonly used. As a PMHNP, I can provide therapy and medication management to support mood stabilization.
